Psychiatry is a medical science that seeks to explain the dynamics of human behaviour in biopsychosocial terms and strives to classify and treat normal and abnormal (disease) behaviour patterns.
As a branch of medicine, psychiatry is intertwined with neuroscience, pharmacology, biochemistry, psychology and medicine. Unlike neurologists and other specialities, psychiatrists specialize in the doctor-patient relationship and are trained in using different forms of psychotherapy and other therapeutic communication techniques.
Psychiatrists are also distinguished from psychologists by their training. They choose the speciality of psychiatry after receiving primary medical training as required for all other medical fields. The psychiatrist, a physician, is authorized and responsible for diagnosing and treating mental disorders.
Psychiatrists can perform physical examinations, order laboratory tests, use neuroimaging tools for diagnosis and differential diagnosis, administer psychotherapy and medication or undergo other psychiatric examinations.
The disease groups that psychiatry diagnoses and treats are listed below.
Panic Disorder and Anxiety Disorders
Bipolar Disorder
Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders
