The Department of Chest Diseases, which is a department that examines diseases related to the lungs, offers inpatient and outpatient follow-up and treatment. On the same day, patients evaluated in the outpatient clinic can undergo chest radiography, lung tomography with or without medication in necessary cases, pulmonary function tests and blood tests related to respiratory diseases.
Bronchoscopy visualises the inside of the lungs with a flexible and lighted camera system for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Diagnostic biopsies and bronchial lavage (washing water from the lung) can be taken from the patient, and therapeutic interventions can be performed. The disease conditions for which diagnostic bronchoscopy is performed can be listed as follows:
1. Chronic cough: This is one of the most common conditions for bronchoscopy. The purpose of bronchoscopy in a patient with a cough is to show possible obstructions in the bronchial tree
2. Coughing up blood from the mouth: Bronchoscopy can be performed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Determining the cause and location of bleeding is why the procedure is performed for diagnostic purposes. It can also be performed during bleeding or 24-48 hours after it is controlled.
3. Presence of abnormal images on chest radiography and chest tomography: Bronchoscopy is performed if there are lung nodules or masses, lung diseases with cavities, masses or lymph nodes occupying space in the chest cavity
4. Paralysis (dysfunction) of the vocal cords: Bronchoscopy is performed to show whether lung pathology is the cause of diseases related to the nerves supplying the vocal cords.
5. Lung infection: To detect the infectious agent, to investigate intra-bronchial obstruction in non-healing pneumonia, to diagnose non-infectious causes, to diagnose opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients
6. Bronchial cancer is essential in diagnosing and staging lung cancer. It is also important in the evaluation of response to treatment.
